LOGLINE
Two unemployed brothers plan to steal an ancient alms box to honor their late mother, but when the silent brother reaches Rome, his encounter with the artifact's beauty turns the heist into a transformative, quiet contemplation.
SYNOPSIS
Umberto and Galatino are two unemployed brothers who decide to steal an ancient alms box to honor the memory of their deceased mother. Galatino sets off for Rome to physically carry out the theft, while Umberto stays home, guiding him from a distance. Umberto is a restless, control-obsessed man, whereas Galatino does not communicate and embarks on the journey in total silence. Once in Rome, Galatino stops answering messages and disappears without a trace. Umberto, growing increasingly worried, tries in vain to contact him; unable to manage the situation any longer, he slowly spirals into anxiety and loneliness. Left on his own, Umberto can do nothing but wait. In this suspended time, he takes refuge in his memories, longing for the Lega Nord and an era now irrevocably lost. Meanwhile in Rome, Galatino reaches the Telearte headquarters and finally finds himself before the alms box. He observes it. Faced with the object's beauty, his muteness transforms into contemplation. Galatino enters a state of ecstasy, gradually forgetting why he is there, and decides not to steal it. He writes a text message to his brother.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Following their collaboration on Ludendo Docet, directors Luca Ferri and Luca Sorgato teamed up to create a film inspired by artist Enrico Baj. Shifted from pure fiction to feature Ivano Costantini—the charismatic figure of Telearte—the project was filmed between Rome and Bergamo. The cast features Ferri’s fetish actors, Dario Bacis (authentically Umberto Bossi’s former driver) and Vincenzo Turca, alongside Costantini playing himself in a half-hour live broadcast. In a uncanny prologue, the voice of the late actress Maria Boto was resurrected using AI.
At its core, the film explores beauty as resistance to modern superficiality. It serves as a praise of contemplation and slow living against a world driven by fast consumption. This is embodied in Galatino’s failed theft: contemplation triumphs over action, framing failure as a path to deeper meaning.
The title Roma Ladrona plays literally on the story’s Roman heist rather than political slogans. Following Ivano Costantini's passing in December 2025, his presence takes on a profound resonance, and the film is dedicated to his memory.
