LOGLINE
A wretch named Antonello desperately tries to assert his own existence by claiming a crime he might not even have committed. Nobody listens to him.
SYNOPSIS
In a sordid seaside pine grove, Antonello finds the severed head of a young boy. He puts it in a plastic bag to confess to the railway police, but the station is closed, so he hides the box containing the head under his bed in a dilapidated boarding house. Antonello survives on the margins—stealing, turning to prostitution, sleeping in train cars, and spending days on a bench in the B. cemetery, his only safe haven.
When the news reports the arrest of a certain Mr. G. for the murder, Antonello refuses to accept it. He desperately insists he is the killer, demanding recognition for the crime, but the police ignore his letters. After Mr. G. commits suicide in prison, the case is closed.
Years pass in a blur of wandering, cheap clients, and fleeting comfort—including a stint in a luxury villa working for a pimp named Cesar before returning to poverty. Obsessed with the forgotten murder, Antonello meets a bandaged "Mummy Man" who claims to know his secret, but the case files have vanished. In a final miserable attempt, Antonello dictates his confession to a bored courthouse clerk who merely tosses it onto a stack of papers.
When his landlady enters a nursing home, Antonello moves permanently to his cemetery bench. Watching a grave being dug, he realizes he has spent his entire life in a state of long, desperate, suspended death.
