LOGLINE
Near Light - Second Lives of Murderers is a four-part, character-driven docuseries following young murderers as they carve their path back into society. The story follows three protagonists, intertwined in every episode, from Czechia, to Italy, and to Romania, with exclusive access to a rehabilitation program that allows them to travel from prison to work or activities outside.
SYNOPSIS
Near Light - Second Lives of Murderers is a four-part, character-driven docuseries following the remarkable journey of three young convicted murderers in European prisons, as they carve their path back into society. Their stories interweave as they strive to rebuild their lives, grappling with guilt and societal misconceptions. From Czechia, to Italy, and to Romania, the three protagonists gain exclusive access to a rehabilitation program that allows them to follow reintegration activities, some working inside the penitentiary, some travelling from prison to work each day, in a limbo between incarceration and the outside world. In Italy, Mattia pictures a future life with his new girlfriend Barbara while commencing an exclusive internship outside prison, but society starts to question him for the murder he committed with his father. In Romania, Florin’s past of drugs and violence resurfaces when he leaves prison for the first time in 13 years to perform in his theatre play tour. In Czechia, Marie dreams of reuniting with her children after years serving for the murder of her boyfriend, but not before going through a tough therapeutic program. These extraordinary characters are examined through the human, intimate, and subjective lens of Dreams, capturing the inmates' struggles and aspirations as they attempt to build a new life. The justice system provides a backdrop, revealing the varied approaches across countries and sparking a broader discussion about second chances. As we delve deeper into their journeys, one question emerges: can a life be rebuilt while another has been taken?
