Triggered by a medical misdiagnosis and an identity crisis, a Moroccan-Italian filmmaker embarks on a journey across Italy, the US, and Morocco, confronting his mother’s sacrifices and the invisible cost of assimilating into Western society.
SYNOPSIS
Raised in the province of Brescia and brought up by Moroccan parents, Elia grows up in “Padania”, shaped by political apathy and the hypnotic Italian commercial TV of the 1980s. Caught in a whirlwind of integration—and lack thereof—he is drawn away for years from seeking his true identity and his real name: Ilyass. His passion for cinema accompanies him from adolescence, becoming the medium through which he learns to tell his story.
Following a misdiagnosis, his defense mechanisms crumble, and a severe anxiety crisis triggers an inevitable reflection on himself and others. Already traveling in the United States to promote his previous film, Elia begins to question his life, and this movie begins to take shape: a journey across three locations that leads him back to his roots in Morocco while re-evaluating the Italy that formed him. It is a journey that also brings him to a profound reflection on his mother, Amal, who never surrendered her identity, paying a heavy price for that choice. It is through her that Elia comes to realize how the very concept of integration can be mystified and corrupted.
Masir explores the rift between who we pretend to be to feel accepted and who we truly are deep down. It is a journey through the countless reflections of ourselves that we learn to project and inhabit—the invisible cost of this daily performance, and the feverish search for our authentic voice when left alone with the truth.
